What challenges are faced by these minorities in societies around the world?
Why do nations decide to change their constitutions to include same sex couple benefits etc.?
First class:

Class discussion on "Swedish study..."
Second and subsequent classes to December 12:
Complete discussion as above.
Prepare for one of the following debate topics related to transgender or gay issues:
Be it resolved that same sex marriage ought to entrenched in the human rights charter of the State of California.
Be it resolved that same sex couples not be allowed the right to parenthood.
Be it resolved that sexual orientation conversion therapy is unethical.
Be it resolved that sexual reassignment therapies/surgeries be publicly funded.
Be it resolved that priests and justices of the peace that refuse to marry same sex couples be charged with committing a hate crime. (this issue can only be debated within the context of a nation that already allows for same sex marriages).
Be it resolved that where numbers warrant, school boards must create a school for the exclusive use of transgender, gay and lesbian students.
Be it resolved that sexual orientation cannot be used as a basis for discrimination in housing, education or within the workplace.
You will have to hand in for a grade four papers. Each will be a reaction to the debate watched. In this paper you will have done the following:
Summarized both sides' arguments and the evidence used to support them (see note taking duty mentioned above).
Choose which team you believe won the debate and explain why.
What your response would be to the question being debated. Value: 80 points for a project based mark. This plus your debate mark makes up your unit grade.
Upload the above on to the page where your debate is set. Have this done on or before January 5, 2009...that's right, next year.
